In a move that signals its growing focus on the North American market, Danish water technology firm Grundfos has officially acquired U.S.-based water and wastewater treatment company Newterra.
The deal, finalized on August 21, gives Grundfos a stronger foothold in the U.S. and Canada, while expanding its capabilities in modular water treatment systems—an area that’s becoming increasingly important as industries and municipalities alike look for more efficient and sustainable water solutions.
“This is a big step forward in our journey to lead in water treatment,” said Inge Delobelle, EVP and CEO of Grundfos’ Industry division. “Newterra brings both expertise and technology that complement what we already offer. Together, we’ll be able to provide more flexible, energy-efficient systems to help customers tackle their water challenges.”
Newterra, based in Pittsburgh, has built a solid reputation for designing and building water treatment systems that are easy to scale and adapt across a variety of applications—from drinking water to stormwater and industrial wastewater. The company operates four facilities across the U.S. and Canada and will bring more than 1,500 employees into the Grundfos water treatment business.
For Grundfos, which crossed the USD 5 billion revenue mark in 2024, the acquisition is part of a broader strategy. Over the past few years, the company has been steadily growing its water treatment business through targeted acquisitions and investments in circular water technologies.
While financial details of the Newterra deal remain undisclosed, Grundfos confirmed the acquisition was made from Chicago-based private equity firm Frontenac.
Delobelle noted the timing of the acquisition is critical. “We’re facing a world where it’s more important than ever to treat, reuse, and manage water with care. Expanding our water treatment capabilities is not just a business decision—it’s about helping solve real, global challenges.”
This latest move adds to Grundfos’ growing network of production sites across Europe and North America and positions the company to offer even more complete solutions in a sector where demand is rising fast.
