Maintaining mixed brand drill rig fleets often means wasting time and money:

  • juggling multiple vendors
  • chasing parts across the country
  • hoping general mechanics can figure out specialized equipment

When equipment breaks down, the clock starts immediately:

  • idle rigs
  • lost revenue
  • thin margins eroding faster

Dan Janesko, equipment manager for Howard Concrete Pumping, spent years navigating a frustrating reality:

  • calling multiple suppliers
  • waiting weeks for quotes
  • tracking down parts from scattered sources

"I was having to call 10 places," he said.

When his Schramm rig needed an exhaust component, one vendor took three weeks to provide a quote.

The Geoprobe® East Coast Service Center had it shipped in less than two.

What the Right Rig Service Partner Delivers

1. Same-Day Parts

Promises mean nothing if parts take weeks. Geoprobe® service centers stock common wear items in-house and ship same-day on orders placed before mid-afternoon.

For Janesko, this responsiveness transformed a Wyoming breakdown into a minor delay.

"They had the Schramm part we needed on the shelf. They overnighted it so we could get back to work with minimal downtime," he said.

2. Cross-brand Drill Rig Repair Expertise

Drilling rigs share more DNA than their nameplates suggest:

  • hydraulic systems
  • top head drives
  • compressors
  • electrical interlocks

A service team with deep experience can diagnose problems faster and avoid the trial-and-error that plagues general mechanics.

"The Geoprobe® service team knows what I'm talking about before I even get it said, and that comes from experience," Janesko said.

When service technicians understand how a machine should function, they identify root causes rather than chasing symptoms.

Mike Bump, running CME and Diedrich rigs for Universal Engineering in Florida, experienced this firsthand. After his CME45 sat idle a month at another shop, the Geoprobe® Southeast Service Center had it running in two days — and caught a hydraulic issue the first shop missed.

3. Phone Support that Solves Problems

Equally valuable is the troubleshooting that prevents unnecessary part orders altogether.

When Brandon Scott with Scott and Son Well Drilling encountered a jib boom swing issue on their Schramm, a phone call to the Geoprobe® East Coast Service Center revealed the fix was a simple valve adjustment — no parts required.

Factory-integrated telematics on newer Geoprobe® rigs let crews troubleshoot on-site while service technicians view the same data remotely — eliminating the miscommunication that slows phone-based support.

4. Centralized Drilling Rig Repair Records

Fleet operators who work with a single service partner gain an underappreciated asset ‑ machine service records on:

  • every repair
  • every replaced component
  • every adjustment

This history becomes a diagnostic tool itself, revealing patterns and predicting failures before they strand a crew in the field.

Travis Hampton of Hampton Well Drilling was struck by this approach after bringing his MiniStar into the Geoprobe® Kansas Service Center for upgrades.

"My rig has only been there one time, and they already have all the information I'll ever need. That was above and beyond anybody I've ever dealt with," he said.

The free Geoprobe Connect™ customer portal extends this visibility to the fleet owner, tracking:

  • orders
  • service notes
  • maintenance schedules
  • rig telemetry data

Instead of digging through paper files or calling for updates, operators can check shipment status and review machine history on demand.

From Reactive to Proactive Rig Repairs

The best service relationships evolve beyond you break it, they fix it, into planned maintenance — a shift that reduces both costs and unplanned downtime.

Colt Berg of Petersheim Brothers Drilling brought in a Geoprobe® East Coast Service Center technician to train a new driller on their Schramm 555. The session specific to their 20-year-old rig covered:

  • daily checklists
  • wear points
  • preventative maintenance

"The training created a direct line between our driller and the Geoprobe ® service lead, which saves time and improves communication in the field," Berg said. "We've moved from reactive repairs to planned maintenance."

Confidence to Invest

When evaluating major equipment purchases, service support is increasingly a deciding factor. Brandon Scott weighed this heavily when considering a Schramm 685 acquisition.

"Having Geoprobe ® service support for this machine was a big part of my decision. Without them, I would have looked at a different brand," he said

Adding a new or used rig to your fleet is only as valuable as your ability to keep it running. A rig without reliable service support carries hidden risk.

Kevin Letchworth of N.W. Poole Well & Pump chose to have the Geoprobe ® East Coast Service Center refurbish his existing Schramm T450 rather than purchase new — a decision that worked because he trusted the service execution.

"It's very refreshing for something in this industry to go as planned," he said. "We're thankful and pleased this one did."

A Different Kind of Rig Service Relationship

A true service partner focuses on getting rigs running not maximizing parts sales, providing:

  • honest assessments
  • transparent pricing
  • free inspections

Ernest Retzer of Hickory Well Drilling experienced this firsthand after bringing a used 2003 Driltech rig to the Geoprobe® North Carolina Service Center. The rig needed extensive work to become field-ready.

"They were quick to respond when I had an issue; professional in communicating what the solutions were; and they did what they said they were going to do, at the price they were going to do it at, and in the time they were going to do it,” he said. “That's everything that you want with service."

The Bottom Line

Drilling contractors already face enough operational complexity without managing multiple service providers. A single service partner with multiple locations, cross-brand expertise, in-house parts, centralized machine records, and fast response times can deliver real value:

  • faster diagnosis and parts → less downtime
  • one vendor → less hassle
  • documented history → smarter maintenance
  • proactive service → fewer surprises
  • greater confidence → smarter equipment investments and expansion decisions

"When a rig is down, the Geoprobe® service team is very reliable in getting the rig going again," Ben Primost of Pickwick Well Drilling said.

When every drilling hour counts, one service partner who knows all your equipment — whatever the brand — helps keep your fleet working and earning.
