Because Obviously, the Moon Needs a Nuclear Reactor

Let’s just take a minute and ask the obvious question: Do we really need a nuclear reactor on the Moon? Because apparently, by 2030, the U.S. Department of Energy and NASA are planning to slap a fission power plant right onto the lunar surface - you know, just in case the Moon runs low on electricity.
According to a shiny new memorandum of understanding, this ambitious nuclear endeavor is part of President Trump’s America First Space Policy, which now includes not just planting flags, but also planting full-blown infrastructure projects on alien soil. Forget solar panels or batteries we’re skipping straight to fission, folks. Because nothing says “sustainable space exploration” like sending radioactive material 238,900 miles into orbit.
We’re told this lunar reactor will be “safe, efficient, and plentiful” and won’t even need refueling for years. Great! Except… what happens when it does need refueling? Or when lunar dust clogs the cooling systems? Or when some rogue space rock crashes into it? Has no one watched a single sci-fi movie?
Sure, it could power future moon bases, space habitats, maybe even your Martian Airbnb someday. But the timing feels… optimistic. Let’s be real: we still haven’t figured out how to keep power running reliably in some parts of rural America, and now we’re going full nuclear - in space. By 2030. With no margin for error and an endless vacuum to test our luck.
And it’s not just about exploration, no, it’s also a bold step in securing “space superiority.” Because apparently, global power now includes being the first to colonize the Moon and be the first to flip the breaker when things go dark up there.
So, yes, nuclear-powered moon bases sound like science fiction. But with the DOE and NASA doubling down, it’s starting to feel more like science fact... or at least, a very expensive experiment.
Coming soon: fission-powered flagpoles and Martian water heaters?
