Remembering Porky
Drilling professional Howard “Porky” Cutter, MGWC, was ahead of his time when it came to the future of drilling.

Howard “Porky” Cutter was a bit of a revolutionary. His time in the drilling industry spanned generations and his affinity for the advances in technology, safety and innovation was frankly ahead of its time.
Cutter, dove into geothermal downhole discovery and released what he believed were its capabilities and reduction on our reliance to traditional methods of energy. And released his thoughts on it on 2006. Ideas, that still shape the narrative of the industry today.
He looked at drillers at their core and understood how the demands of the work the industry does daily might rise, even if he didn’t understand yet the advances that would put strain on workload. Here we sit today, with the proliferation of artificial intelligence, something that was still very much a passive thought when he wrote about it in 2005.
But he was also an avid attendee of the Jubilee and enjoyed meeting attendees, exhibitors, and vendors alike. In honor of the work he did for The Driller, his affinity for the Jubilee and the industry he made a career out of, we’re inviting you to read two of his columns, written 20 years ago, that were ahead of their time.
A Professional Driller
Howard "Porky" Cutter describes why one contractor earns the title.
Douglas Allen, has always been a very professional well driller. A friend, Linda Cash, called me to tell me that her well was being drilled and invited me to watch. Another driller friend and I went to visit the drill site, which was a couple hours from Virginia Beach. The driller, Douglas Allen, also a friend, was drilling near Saluda, Va.
Porky’s Hole Thoughts: Geothermal Drilling
These systems are reliable, dependable and economical, if installed properly.
Sometime back, I was a geothermal site inspector for a college. My job was to oversee and document all the geothermal holes drilled, closed loops installed, grouting of the holes and the testing of the loops.
