Last week — Emergency officials in Brenham issued a brief shelter-in-place order last week after a hazardous materials incident involving hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and oil occurred during a routine water well drilling operation near 9920 Oil Field Road.
The incident began when workers unexpectedly struck underground pockets of hydrogen sulfide gas and oil while drilling. The City of Brenham Fire Department responded immediately to the site, taking precautionary action to protect public safety. Nearby residents were advised to remain indoors as gas levels were monitored.
Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic, colorless gas with a distinctive “rotten egg” odor. Even short-term exposure can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and respiratory system, while higher concentrations may result in loss of consciousness or death. It is heavier than air, meaning it can collect in low-lying areas and pose serious risks during an uncontrolled release.
The wellhead was successfully plugged, and hazardous materials teams—including support from College Station and the Washington County Office of Emergency Management—conducted monitoring that showed gas levels had dropped to zero. At that point, officials lifted the shelter-in-place order and confirmed that the immediate threat had been neutralize
While the exact cause of the release remains under review, experts note that such incidents can occur when drilling operations encounter previously untapped pockets of gas or hydrocarbons. These conditions are rare but possible in regions with complex underground geology, such as parts of southeast Texas.
Brenham, located approximately 75 minutes northwest of downtown Houston along US-290, remains under normal operations. City and emergency officials will continue to assess the area and advise residents of any developments.
