Siemens has announced the release of the SINAMICS G120XE, an enclosed drive system designed for industrial applications such as pumps, fans, and compressors. This system, built around the SINAMICS G120X infrastructure drive, is intended for use in various markets, including drilling, geothermal, water/wastewater, power plants, industrial climate control, refrigeration, and chiller applications in harsh environments.

The SINAMICS G120XE system is available in NEMA 1 and optional NEMA 12 enclosures. The base enclosure can be wall-mounted for applications up to 75 hp, while a free-standing floor module is suitable for uses up to 200 hp. The system includes standard electrical features such as UL508A listing, SCCR rating to 65kA, circuit breaker disconnect with flange-mounted operator handle, mechanical door interlock, control power transformer for internal power control, and a power module with PWM IGBT inverter. Overload ratings allow for operation in both light and high overload duty conditions.

The enclosure’s ventilation fans are controlled by a relay and run only as needed, which saves energy and reduces noise. Optional features include output filters and reduced voltage soft start (RVSS) bypass. The system is equipped with an intelligent operator panel (IOP-2), which simplifies setup and commissioning. According to Siemens Enclosed Drive Product Manager Chuck Fernandez, the system self-guides the operator with on-screen instructions via a keypad-guided menu. The G120XE is tested for shock, vibration, and electromagnetic interference (EMI).

The drive can also be commissioned, set up, or modified using Wi-Fi-enabled devices through the Smart Access Module or the Siemens Totally Integrated Automation (TIA) Portal via a GSD file. Siemens also offers the SIZER configuration software tool to help with selecting and matching the G120X drive system with a Siemens motor and other components. Communication with higher-level SCADA and PLC systems is possible via PROFINET or EtherNet/IP™, with additional options such as PROFIBUS, MODBUS RTU, and BacNet MS/TP.

The SINAMICS G120XE is designed for digitalization and remote monitoring, featuring a built-in web server and the capability to connect to the SINAMICS Connect 300. This allows operators and maintenance personnel to access real-time status and cloud-based analytics using the Analyze MyDrive app on mobile devices.
