As part of its effort to communicate the latest information on the federal final rule that sets drinking water standards for five individual per-and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances, including PFOA, PFOS, PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has scheduled a free webinar on the PFAS drinking water rule for April 30, 2024, from 2 to 3 p.m. ET.

The PFAS rule was finalized on April 10, 2024, and the EPA webinar is scheduled to cover two topics, including an overview of the drinking water regulation and treatment processes for removing PFAS compounds from drinking water, EPA says. In addition, a question and answer session is scheduled to be held from 3 to 3:30 p.m.

Ashley Greene of the EPA’s Office of Water is scheduled to provide the overview of the final PFAS National Primary Drinking Water Regulation, and will cover key regulatory requirements and timing for water systems and drinking water primacy agencies to comply with these requirements, background on the regulation development, and funding information to support implementation of the rule, the EPA says.

The EPA says Nicholas Dugan of the EPA’s Office of Research and Development is scheduled to lead the presentation on treatment processes designated as the best available technologies for removing PFAS from drinking water, including granular activated carbon, ion exchange, and membranes. According to the agency, there will be a brief discussion on the fundamentals of each process, followed by basic considerations of process selection, design, and costing.

Officials who are likely to benefit from the webinar are state, tribal, and territory personnel responsible for drinking water regulations compliance and treatment technologies permitting, EPA says. Others who may also benefit from the webinar include system operators, technical assistance providers, and local government personnel, the agency says.

The next PFAS webinar to be hosted by the EPA is scheduled for August 27, 2024, and will cover “Regulatory Updates” on PFAS. However, webinar dates and topics are subject to change, and additional information and registration will be made public closer to the scheduled date and as it becomes available, the EPA says.
