A bill that would ban the gasoline additive methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) was recently approved by the Environment and Public Works Committee by bipartisan vote and will now move to the Senate floor. The bill would authorize $400 million for the cleanup of contamination and prevention of further contamination caused by MTBE and ban the use of the fuel additive in gasoline within four years. The bill would also allow governors to waive the oxygen mandate in the Clean Air Act, while preserving the environmental benefits of the air toxins limits in the statue.
