When many of my readers see the letters “HDD,” they think of the type of rig they might see in a suburb installing utility lines under a road or other small infrastructure.

The drilling industry often wrestles with filling jobs, whether it’s water well contractors trying to keep good mud techs on staff or oil and gas companies trying to find talent trained in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

Okay, I have to admit that five years ago, had anyone mentioned the term “drilling,” I would have assumed they were referring to some sort of DIY project.
