The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has launched a cleanup effort at a former chemical processing facility in La Porte, Indiana, after finding hundreds of deteriorating containers filled with potentially dangerous substances.
The site, formerly operated by Glycerin Traders at 3522 South State Route 104, has been sitting on more than 700 containers of liquid waste, many of which are unlabeled or in poor condition. Some containers are corroded, bulging, or open, raising serious safety concerns. Labels on a few drums hint at the presence of hydrochloric acid, organic peroxides, and potassium nitrate, all materials that can react violently or catch fire if improperly stored.
EPA officials say they began removing the hazardous waste this week, with work expected to wrap up later this fall, weather permitting. Crews will identify, consolidate, and safely dispose of the chemicals off-site while monitoring air quality to ensure nearby neighborhoods aren’t affected. Residents may notice more truck traffic and workers in protective gear as the operation continues.
Glycerin Traders operated the facility as a waste-materials refining and processing plant from 2010 until its closure in 2024, handling everything from waste oils and acids to flammable solvents. Earlier this year, the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) flagged the company for multiple violations of federal waste-handling rules under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). That prompted IDEM to request EPA’s intervention this spring.
The agency determined the site met the criteria for a time-critical removal action, meaning the conditions posed an immediate risk to public health or the environment.
EPA’s cleanup will eliminate that risk, preventing potential chemical releases, fires, or explosions, and ensure the waste is disposed of properly.
