Student Awards Given at 2013 NGWA Summit

Four students shared $4,000 in awards for paper or poster presentations made at the 2013 NGWA Summit, which wrapped up early this month in San Antonio, Texas. The Farvolden Awards are given out by the National Ground Water Research and Education Foundation.

The Farvolden Awards honor the late Dr. Robert Farvolden, who served as senior science counsel for the National Ground Water Association and studied the relationships between groundwater and surface water. Scholarships went to students based on the quality and content of their presentations, and demonstrated insight on topics of groundwater science, engineering, management or policy.

This year’s award winners are:

Si Gou of Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, for the paper “Understanding Groundwater Uptake by Phreatophytic Vegetation Using a System Dynamics Modeling Approach.”
David H. Ju of Baylor University, Waco, Texas, for the paper “Effect of Urbanization and Mining to an Alluvial Aquifer in Central Texas.”
Ranjani Ravi of the University of Cincinnati, Ohio, for the poster “A Novel Approach for Detection of Norovirus in Groundwater.”
Thomas Robert of the Institut National de la Recherché Scientifique, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, for the paper, “LNAPL In Situ Recovery in Low Permeability Soil Using Soil Washing and Multi-Phase Vacuum Extraction.”

The NGWREF, founded in 1994, is the charitable arm of the National Ground Water Association. It is focused on conducting educational, research and other activities that promote a broader understanding of groundwater use and access. NGWA is a nonprofit that supports responsible development, management and use of water resources. It’s comprised of groundwater professionals ranging from contractors to equipment manufacturers to scientists and engineers.
