In turn? The company prides itself by consistently remaining in the Top 10 of all footwear sold on the site, whether that’s for waterproof insulated winter footwear to ASTM-certified boots for every industry. Recently, the company released a line of work boots that feel anything but traditional.

We put one of their pairs, the Terrascope-Nano, to the test. What we discovered was a lightweight boot that features an even lighter weight composite toe, thick outsole but a sneaker-like nylon design that feels secure without feeling like you’re wearing a block. The result? A boot that withstood the rigors and didn’t feel like you were lugging a cinderblock around our ankles by the end of the day.

The fit was so good that we sat down with Ronny Chi, product manager at NORTIV 8, who oversees the company’s running, tactical and workwear division. Chi discussed their latest designs, how it suits the drilling industry, and why NORTIV 8 is totally fine with making a quality boot away from the limelight.

The one thing we noticed about the Terrascope-Nano boots is just how lightweight they are, how much is that by design and what would you say to drillers who might prefer a bulkier boot?

Ronny Chi: Lightweight construction was a core design goal for the Terrascope-Nano from the very beginning. It wasn’t an unintended benefit of using less material — it was something we deliberately designed for.

From our experience at NORTIV 8, whether we were developing mountaineering boots or work footwear, we’ve always shared the same belief: protection doesn’t have to mean simply adding more material.

For workers who spend long hours on their feet, walking back and forth, and climbing equipment throughout the day, the weight of heavy boots adds to the strain of standing, walking, and climbing over a long shift. So our goal was to meet the necessary protection requirements while eliminating weight that wasn’t actually contributing to protection, helping reduce fatigue during extended work.

I also understand why many people in the drilling industry trust traditional, heavier work boots. In demanding working environments, durability and solid protection have always been important considerations.

Our approach with the Terrascope-Nano wasn’t simply to remove protective elements in order to make the boot lighter. Instead, we started by defining the specific work environments the boot was intended for, and then reconsidered the materials and construction around those requirements.

Different working conditions call for different levels of protection. Our philosophy is to first understand the environment, then match the safety features to it, rather than making every work boot carry weight that isn’t necessary for the job.

The Terrascope-Nano isn’t meant to replace traditional heavy-duty boots. It’s another option for workers in a wider range of jobs—a solution that provides the protection they need while helping take some of the strain off their feet during long shifts.

What would say is the idea that goes into the design of your work boots specifically at NORTIV 8?

RC: I would summarize our approach to NORTIV 8 work boots in three principles: Safety and compliance first. Built for real-world conditions. No compromise on quality at scale.

First, safety is non-negotiable. We use the ASTM industrial safety standards in the U.S. as a baseline requirement for our work boots. Safety requirements have to be built into the development process from the beginning. They shouldn’t be something we try to fix with a last-minute adjustment after testing.

Second, our design has to be grounded in what workers actually experience on the job, not how those conditions might look from an office.

Workers are on their feet for long shifts, constantly moving, navigating loose rock, debris, wet or slippery ground, and frequently climbing on and off heavy equipment. We don’t design to check boxes on a spec sheet, and we never prioritize looks over real-world function

Third, we don’t compromise when it comes to bringing a design into mass production. The level of protection and comfort we develop during testing has to carry through consistently into large-scale manufacturing. At the same time, we have to manage costs carefully so that frontline workers can actually afford the boots, rely on them for daily use over the long term, and still be confident they meet the required safety standards.

Put simply: make sure the boot is safe first, address the discomfort that comes with wearing it all day, and then make that reliable protection accessible to more workers.

The Terrascope-Nano has a very lightweight yet strong composite toe. Can you offer any insight into what went into the design of the protection for workers with this boot?

RC: When we developed the toe protection, we focused first on the realities of job sites, particularly the risk of falling objects and compression around the foot.

Traditional steel toes have a long track record of reliable protection, but they also come with a few practical drawbacks. They add weight and conduct temperature, which can make the toes feel colder in cold environments and absorb heat in hot ones. Metal can also be inconvenient in situations where workers have to pass through metal detectors, sometimes requiring them to remove their boots during security checks.

We chose a high-performance composite toe because it allowed us to address some of those limitations without compromising the required level of protection. The Terrascope-Nano was tested to the applicable requirements of ASTM F2413-24 and meets the corresponding protective standard. At the same time, the composite construction helps reduce weight and has lower thermal conductivity than steel. And because it contains no metal, it can make metal-detection situations much less of a hassle.

But changing the toe material alone isn’t enough. Protection is a system; it’s not about one individual component.

We also looked at the overall fit and internal volume of the boot, because feet can swell after standing and working for an entire day. We adjusted the midfoot stability structure and reinforced the heel as well.

On a job site, you have to think beyond the toe area. The amount of space inside the boot, the stability of the upper, and the structure around the heel all affect how the boot performs over a long shift.

Our thinking was that the composite toe is one part of a larger protection system, not simply a selling point. The boot as a whole has to balance weight, protection, and durability. We don’t want to make a boot lighter at the expense of the reliability workers depend on day after day.

NORTIV 8 is a brand that seems content to be out of the mainstream, do you prefer being an under the radar brand that produces quality footwear?

RC: You’re right. We didn’t set out to create a brand. We set out to solve a problem.

Our approach with NORTIV 8 has always been to put performance and the end user first. We believe the strongest product reputation comes from the people actually wearing the shoes, not simply from how much advertising a brand does.

There’s a philosophy we often come back to: a shoe that has a problem tells you a story. That’s why our team pays close attention to customer complaints, feedback, and suggestions. Those insights help us identify where a product can be improved and guide the next round of development.

That’s also why we genuinely value independent reviews and feedback. We hope your review of the Terrascope-Nano will give us a comprehensive perspective on how the boot performs in the real world and where we can continue to improve it.

Of course, we want more workers to know about NORTIV 8. But we’d rather be remembered because our boots hold up to the demands of the job, day after day—not because we had the loudest slogan.
