Atlas Copco Launches New Boyles C8C Surface Core Rig

March 1, 2013

Atlas Copco recently launched the Boyles C8C, a new exploration drilling rig designed with power and simplicity in mind. The company says the new rig widens the field of potential users for exploration drilling.

“Atlas Copco is one of the world leaders in surface core drilling rigs and for more than 100 years exploration professionals have depended on our ability to deliver excellent results in conditions of extreme heat, cold, drought, humidity, or high altitude,” said Martin Sommers, vice president for Marketing-Capital Equipment at Atlas Copco’s Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration division.

“The Atlas Copco Boyles C8C has been specially designed for high productivity with maximum simplicity and ease of service and maintenance.”

The Boyles C8C was unveiled at the China Mining exhibition in November. It is currently only available for Asia markets. The Boyles product range-formerly known under the C-Series name-will complement the existing Christensen range of surface core drilling rigs manufactured in Märsta, Sweden.

The new rig with equipped with a powerful main hoist (capacity 133 kN, 30 000 lb) and a rod holder that handles rods from BO to PO size and casing up to PW. The rotation unit can generate the highest penetration rate and a 4-speed gearbox converts power into high torque. The Boyles C8C also comes standard with a radio remote, which can control tramming functions from a safe distance. The company says this eliminates the danger of being near the machine while it’s in motion. The rig can reach depths of 6,000 feet, and is designed to allow operators to service and maintain the machine in the field.

Atlas Copco, based in Stockholm, Sweden, is a leader in segments ranging from compressors and air treatment systems to construction, mining and drilling equipment. The company, founded in 1873, has more than 37,500 employees worldwide, and operates in more than 170 countries. Atlas Copco in North America operates in more than 109 locations and employs more than 4,500 people in the United States. For more information, visit www.atlascopco.us.
