EPA Presents New Perchlorate Guidance

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued new protective guidance for cleaning up perchlorate contamination situations, recommending a preliminary clean-up goal for perchlorate of 24.5 parts per billion in water. EPA's guidance is derived from the agency's reference dose for perchlorate, which is based on the 2005 recommendations and conclusions of the National Academy of Sciences.

Ground Water Summit in San Antonio

U.S. Geological Survey acting director P. Patrick Leahy, Ph.D., will be the Keynote Speaker at the second annual Ground Water Summit to be held April 22-27 in San Antonio, Texas.
The Summit offers conference sessions and workshops as well as lectures, panel forums and field trips. It is sponsored by the Association of Ground Water Scientists and Engineers (AGWSE), a membership division of the National Ground Water Association (NGWA).

Chemical engineer Kamalesh Sirkar, Ph.D., a professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology and an expert in membrane separation technology, is leading a team of researchers to develop a breakthrough method to desalinate water. Sirkar says that using his technology, engineers will be able to recover water from brines with the highest salt concentrations.
