For Drilling In-Site, episode 37, hosts Jeremy Verdusco and Brock Yordy speak with Colt McCarthy, president of Venture Drilling Supply. The Austin, Texas-based company has locations in California, Arkansas and Oklahoma. It supports clients in water well and mining across the U.S. with new and used drilling equipment, as well as service in the field. We brought Colt on the show to talk about the challenges of keeping drillers up and running.

“Specifically right now, it’s the truck availability and product components,” McCarthy says. “It seems like everything is stuck somewhere other than at the factory where it needs to be.”

Supply chain unevenness has plagued many aspects of the drilling industry this year.

“It’s everything. It’s the supplier’s supplier’s supplier, all the way down to the root. If, like, a rotary head motor for a top drive is not available, you just can’t finish a drill. I know everybody is seeing those same issues.”

This episode covers topics like:

  • Transitioning from drilling contractor to drilling industry supplier.
  • The challenges of supplying drilling rigs.
  • Finding drillers capable of running a wide range of equipment.
  • Growth areas in the drilling industry.
  • Making the drilling industry attractive for young people.
