NGWA Groundwater Publication Announces Editorial Team

NGWA
March 6, 2014

Hendrik M. Haitjema, Ph.D., was named the editor-in-chief of Groundwater, a technical publication for hydrogeologists produced by the National Ground Water Association.

Haitjema is the seventh editor-in-chief of the publication now in its 52nd year. He takes over for Franklin W. Schwartz, Ph.D.

A professor emeritus from Indiana University, Haitjema served as a professor at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs until August 2012. He taught, among other subjects, groundwater flow modeling and applied mathematics.

"I am honored to serve as the next editor-in-chief of Groundwater, and hope to uphold and indeed further promote the excellent reputation of this journal," Haitjema said.

Haitjema has a specialization in groundwater hydrology and his research interests include the development and application of mathematical models for regional groundwater flow systems, three-dimensional groundwater flow embedded in two-dimensional flow models (Dupuit-Forchheimer models), freshwater and saltwater interface flow, transit time distributions in watersheds, and the conjunctive modeling of surface water and groundwater flow.

He published the analytic element model GFLOW in 1994 and the book Analytic Element Modeling of Groundwater Flow in 1995. He has also published on the performance of the finite difference code MODFLOW and developed a hybrid GFLOW-MODFLOW modeling approach.

Haitjema received his master's degree in civil engineering from the Technical University of Delft in the Netherlands in 1976 and his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1982.

For the first time in the history of Groundwater, Haitjema will be joined by three executive editors. The new positions are part of a redesigned peer-review workflow model created to better the content for the journal. Groundwater, which has a worldwide readership, received a record number of submissions in 2013, prompting the new model.

Groundwater's first executive editors are Thomas M. Missimer, Ph.D., King Abdullah University of Science and Technology; Robert A. Schincariol, Ph.D., University of Western Ontario; and Kristine A. Uhlman, University of Texas at Austin.

"Groundwater is rapidly growing in popularity with ever more manuscripts being submitted," Haitjema said. "Each of these executive editors will manage the review of about a third of the manuscripts and recommend publication decisions to the editor-in-chief. I really look forward to working with this new editorial team."

NGWA is a nonprofit that supports responsible development, management and use of water resources. It’s comprised of groundwater professionals ranging from contractors to equipment manufacturers to scientists and engineers. For more information, visit www.ngwa.org.
