A group of engineers and scientists from BHC Co., the major utility subsidiary of Aquarion Co. that serves 29 communities in Connecticut, partnered with University of Massachusetts educators to complete research that verifies that dissolved air flotation (DAF), a water clarification technology, protects drinking water from possible disease-causing microorganisms more effectively than more widely-used sedimentation, reports Water Tech Online.
The research also confirmed that recycling the water used to clean clogged filters back to the beginning of the treatment process does not affect the quality of the treated water, the group says. This research is important because DAF is not yet recognized in many regulations for its effectiveness in removing particles such as cryptosporidium and giardia cysts.
