EPA region 3 recently awarded grants of $52.7 million and $32.5 million, respectively, to Pennslyvania and Maryland to support their Clean Water State Revolving Fund programs. The states use the SRFs to provide low-interest loans to municipalities to construct or improve wastewater treatment facilities and conduct water quality management projects. Pennsylvania matched its EPA grant with an additional $10.5 million in state funds, while Maryland provided $6.4 million in matching funds. During the last 11 years, EPA has provided more than $672 million in SRF funding to Pennsylvania and more than $409 million to Maryland. As the loans are repaid, the money is used to finance new projects.
