Nine drinking water wells have been shut down in Orange County because of state concerns over a new contaminant, though levels detected so far are too low to present a public-health threat, according to an Orange County Register report.
The contaminant, listed as a probable carcinogen, appears to be coming from the Orange County Water District. The wells were closed after tests revealed the presence of 1,4-dioxane, often used as an industrial solvent.
